As the term threshold implies, you are adjusting the audio level to accept or reject targets depending on the strength of the targets audio signal. The magnetic field around a coil will be seeing all that stuff in the ground within its range but a NORMAL threshold setting will block the weaker signals. Open up the threshold setting to full audio and the weaker signals start coming thru and the stronger signals start sounding louder. If you hot-tune a detector, it pays to really slow down your coil sweep, giving the motion type discriminator time to sort out the ground and trash signals from the good signals.
